CHAPTER SEVEN

Asking and Listening

Everything is conscious and communicating.

Throughout my training and many years of co-teaching with my guides, they have emphasized that Spirit, the essence of all of life, is always conscious and communicating. Along with this assertion has come the message that it’s possible to dialogue with Spirit in many forms: with Oneness, the Spirit that pervades all of life; the Spirit within the particular essence of an individual; and with etheric beings such as guides and teachers, who reside in spiritual realms. There are countless practical uses of direct communication on the spiritual level.

For example, when my son was approaching the age for middle school, I had to decide whether to register him in the local secondary public school or the private middle school his older sister attended. I remembered my guides’ recommendation to ask and listen to the spiritual essence of my children before making important parenting decisions. Of course, I thought it was a no-brainer. The private school offered smaller classes and a beautiful campus with plenty of amenities, and having both children in the same school would be easier for me. Rationally, the private school option just made sense. But I’d been taught not to assume, and instead to ask and listen.

So I meditated, focusing through my third eye, and projected my consciousness into an image of my son. I stretched my awareness into the core of his being. I knew I’d reached his Spirit when I felt a pervasive and expansive feeling of peace and love. Then I asked, “Which school would serve your highest good, public school or private school?” It didn’t take long to hear the resounding reply: “Public school!” I was so surprised, I had to ask again, and again I heard, “Public school!” With a sigh, I resigned myself to implementing this response based on my commitment to spiritual attunement, but I certainly didn’t understand it.

At that point, I had no idea why public school was the better choice. I sent my son off to the crowded, noisy junior high, curious to see how the situation would unfold. The feedback from life didn’t come quickly. A couple of years passed before the regional junior and senior high schools decided to offer a Chinese language program. My son immediately signed up; all of his favorite books as a young child had been about China. The most striking aspect of this story is that although we lived in a college community with many prep schools, none of them offered a Chinese language program at that time. The public school in our area was the first. If my son had attended the same private school as his sister, which my rational mind had considered the better option, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to study Mandarin in high school. His Spirit’s wisdom provided him the advantage of setting him on his career path early—he now works in China—and paved the way for success in college.

Sometimes life intervenes on its own, to provide the appropriate direction and opportunities.
